Founded in 2013, Kindred Planet Productions (KPP) strives to capture the interconnectedness of a 21st century world, raise awareness, and inspire change by bringing into focus stories from the margins. KPP endeavors to integrate a justice-based approach to documentary filmmaking and digital media creation, at all stages of production. A continuation of the KPP mission, Kindred Planet Collective is a dynamic body of changemakers working together to create spaces, experiences, and communities where humans can flourish in kinship with each other and the planet.
Justice-based Filmmaking:
Coined by KPP founder and Executive Director, Kate Kirby, "Justice-based Filmmaking" is an ethos that influences and inspires actions taken at every stage of content production, and organizational operations. An expansion of tenants of equality and inclusion found in a social justice framework, a justice-based approach to filmmaking is grounded in a sense of connectivity between all aspects of a shared planet—the interrelated nature of social, economic, and environmental factors. Justice theory begins with the acknowledgement that mainstream methodologies and systems are not designed for, or by marginalized communities, which oftentimes results in a lack of accurate representation of the multiplicity of the human experience. There is a baseline belief that we can do better individually, and collectively. Alongside the acknowledgment that there is always room for growth, there are concrete actions taken throughout a film’s lifecycle, from content conception to distribution. Though there are many barriers to progress, there is a prevailing commitment to working toward equality and justice for all.
In Progress...
Kindred Planet Collective is a living organism comprised of individuals who are in process. Once new awareness is gained, it can take time to access the resources required to implement changes. We believe that progress is a process. We welcome your invaluable unique experiences and knowledge as we journey on in a spirit of kinship.
